"A synthesis of the shrub vegetation of the class Calluno-Ulicetea in its natural distribution area (Western Europe) is carried out. The revision of the heaths was made taking as a base some 1500 inventories, which were published by different authors. Most of the associations have been revised as well in their nomenclatural aspects as in structure, floristic, biogeographic and bioclimatic aspects. The biogeographical base is the map of provinces published by Rivas-MartÃnez (1987). There are analyzed 92 heath associations from several european biogeographical units, being the Cantabro-Atlantica province that with a higher number of communities (40), and then the Carpetano-Iberico-Leonesa (17) and Luso-Extremadurense (16) provinces. This supporting that the temperate areas from the Iberian Peninsula and the mediterranean iberoatlantic territories are the genetic centre of the european heaths." (source : auteur) |
