"A report by lan Carle of an unusual orchid found by him on 22nd May 2016 at a former gravel pit site in south Hertfordshire (v.c.20) was accompanied by a photograph of what was undoubtedly Orchis militaris (Military Orchid) (Colour Section Plate 1). Given the significance of this record, a visit to the site was irnrnediately organised by myself and lan Denholm, as orchid coreferee for the BSB1, not just to confirm the occurrence but to take stock ofits possible origin."
