Climatic climax heaths of the alliance Dactylo-Ulicion occur widely in western Britain, and the new associations Genisto maritimae-Ericetum cinereae, Anthyllido corbirei-Ericetum cinereae are described. The British distribution of Ulici (europaei) maritimi-Ericetum cinereae is confined to Cornwall, whilst that of the Ulici (gallii) humilis-Ericetum cinereae (as the new sub-association holocetum) is from Cornwall to the Isle of Man. Heaths of humid (mesophilous) environments in southern Britain belong to the Ulici-Ericion ciliaris. New associations described from this alliance are the Ulici gallii-Ericetum vagantis (confined to the Lizard peninsula, Cornwall), Agrostio setaceae-Ulicetum minoris (western mesophilous heaths on sands and gravel) and Agrostio setaceae-Ulicetum minoris (an eastern vicariant). Both the Ulici gallii-Ericetum ciliaris and Ulici minoris-Ericetum ciliaris also occur in Britain, but in very localised areas of Cornwall and Dorset. Dry heaths belong to the Ulici-Ericion cinereae, and this is represented by two associations: Ulici gallii-Ericetum cinereae (western Britain) and Ulici minoris-Ericetum cinereae (south-eastern Britain). Two new subassociations are described for these associations.
