"This paper focuses on the importance of herbaria as far as plant nomenclature is concerned. Much of my own work revolves around the scientific names .first coined for plants by the Swedish scientist Carl von Linné (1707-1778).
Until binomial nomenclature was adopted, long descriptions known as polynomials had been usedfor naming species. But in 1753, Linné devised a single species name, as an adjunct, to go with the generic name. This shorthand naming system proved so use.ful that it was widely adopted later in Linné 's lifetime, and it continues in use today for the majority of biological organisms. Linné 's binomial names continue to be important because, by international agreement, his Species Plantarum of 1753 pro vides the starting point for naming most groups of plants.
The herbarium was a key research toolfor Linné. He wouldfrequently base his concept of a given species on a mixture of herbarium material and the published descriptions and illustrations of earlier authors, and sometimes on living material tao. Linné himself colfected plants in the field mostly in Sweden, with notable collections made on the Baltic islands of Gland and Gotland, as weil as in Lapland in 1732.
