"Riverine ecosystems are characterized mainly by a dynamic water-regime with periodical inundations in large parts of the riparian forests and times of very low water-level.
Epigaeic fauna is subject to this extreme situation and is, because of its quick reaction against changes of abiotic and biotic factors and its spatial distribution, of high bio-indicatorial value.
Based on pitfall-trapping and hand-collections the epigaeic fauna in the system of flood-depression and embankment as one type of zonation-biocoenoses of riverine forests is described.
With respect to actual technical interferences in the ecosystem of the Rhine it is pointed out, that further dams as the "Staustufe Neuburgweier" will destroy last remnants of intact riverine biotopes, and that plans to continue the "Altrhein-Verbund" are unfit for the aspired regeneration of riparian biotopes and biocoenoses."
