[Thèmes] TaxonomieMots-clés : conservation morphométrie spéciation aire de répartition Résumé : "Although the majority of taxonomic studies of European orchids treat Pseudorchis as a monotypic genus, some observers have argued that the apparently circumboreal segregate P. straminea should also be treated as a full species. Here, we compare detailed in vivo measurements of 55 plants from nine populations of P. albida in Britain with ten plants from three populations of P. straminea in Iceland, We apply morphometric statistics to data for 31 morphometric characters, culled from an original set of 36. We also review current (limited) DNA-based evidence of their evolutionary divergence. Of the 31 variable morphometric characters, 14 help to distinguish the two species, including labellum dimensions, spur length, flower colour, bract and leaf lengths, leaf colour and apical hooding. Molecular divergence (notably in ITS) approximates the lowest level needed for acceptance of species-level distinction, but thus far, the molecular information is typological and does not encompass seemingly intermediate populations of ‘P. tricuspis’ occurring in the mountains of central Europe. Pseudorchis has the potential to become a valuable model system for the study of speciation and subsequent inter-/post-glacial migration. Despite persistent rumours, we found no evidence that P. straminea (or ‘P. tricuspis’) occurs in the British Isles; nonetheless, this species should continue to be sought in suitable habitats in northern Scotland. Morphological variation within P. albida is comparatively low, though the most exposed of our study populations exhibits (presumably ecophenotypic) dwarfing." Two species, Ophrys fusca s.l. and Ophrys dyris (= O. omegaifera subsp. dyris) belonging to Ophrys section Pseudophrys are the focus of this study. In the context of an integrative study of morphological and genetic diversity of O. fusca and O. dyris, genome size (GS) and cytotype diversity were surveyed from Portuguese populations. Flow cytometry methods were used to assess GS, and subsequently determine the ploidy level of 67 specimens, including the species and putative hybrids. Cytotypes were also confirmed based on chromosome counts from the roots of two specimens, one of each species. Constancy of nuclear DNA content (1C = 11.19 pg) and ploidy level (2n = 4x = 72, 74) was documented among all the individuals analysed. Implications are considered, in terms of interpreting the origin and predicting the persistence of putative hybrids." Coppice-with-standards stands were clear-felled during the Second World War and replanted with conifer/conifer-broadleaved mixtures in which the conifer was dominant. Since 1985 broadleaves have been favoured. In 1983, the ground flora had been recorded in six plantation stands of different tree species and compared with three remnant broadleaved stands. Five 200 m2 quadrats were taken spread across each stand. The survey was repeated using the same methods in 2015 to assess changes. In addition, in 2015, single 200 m2 quadrats were taken in 21 other stands to put the re-recorded stands into a wider site context. In the nine re-recorded stands, six stands lost species (mean number of species per quadrat) between 1983 and 2015, only three stands gained them. Increases in species richness were associated with management (felling or thinning) or where stands had opened out through wind-throw. Species with higher Ellenberg light scores showed higher turnover than more shade-tolerant species. In stands recorded only in 2015 oak Quercus robur stands derived from formerly conifer-dominant crops, showed a similar richness and species profile to the remnant broadleaved stands. Specialist woodland plants did not appear to be adversely affected by this active management of the stands. The results indicate that in terms of the ground flora at this site the 1985 Broadleaves Policy achieved one of its aims of maintaining/restoring the special character of ancient woodland." Four new species in Taraxacum section Celtica A. J. Richards are described, T. aesculosum, T. gaelorum, T. hibernicola and T. inclinorum; only the first is known outside Ireland, where the first three are quite widespread. Taraxacum pietii-oosterveldii H. Øllgaard, a relative of T. nordstedtii Dahlst., is newly recorded for Ireland from six Irish vice-counties; it also has not yet been recorded from Britain. The rare British wetland species T. anglicum Dahlst. and T. palustrisquameum A. J. Richards are recorded from Ireland for the first time, and the Spanish species, T. nietoi A. J. Richards, apparently extinct in Britain, has persisted in an Irish locality for 10 years. A new variety of T. ronae L. J. Margetts which lacks leaf spotting is described as var. immaculatum A. J. Richards; this variety seems more common in Ireland than the type. Taraxacum ronae is a common and widespread species in Ireland." [Thèmes] TaxonomieMots-clés : hybridation Hieracium depilatum aire de répartition Résumé : "The taxonomic position and evolution of the five Scandinavian montane species previously referred to the informal group Depilata of Hieracium are discussed. There is very little modern information about these species and as they have not been listed under any of the currently accepted sections of the genus they are at risk of being completely forgotten. They have always been considered as intermediate between H. sect. Alpina and sect. Prenanthoidea, but as discussed here they can hardly be included in either of these sections. However, C European species intermediate between the same two sections have been referred to H. sect. Pulmonarioidea and it appears appropriate to include the Depilata here as well. Hereby, the geographic range of H. sect. Pulmonarioidea is most significantly enlarged and its morphological circumscription is somewhat amended. The morphology of Scandinavian H. sect. Pulmonarioidea is described and a brief overview of the species and their distribution is provided. In addition, the possibility that the species concerned may have evolved in situ in Scandinavia through hybridisation between members of H. sect. Alpina and sect. Prenanthoidea is discussed." The augmentation of records is undertaken through four surveys of post-industrial water bodies in the period 2007–2013, specifically, of the Durham Magnesian Limestone Natural Area; Carboniferous Limestone quarries of Upper Weardale; lead mine reservoirs on the moorlands of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; lakes and ponds of the central Wear Valley. As a result of the surveys the charophyte database was more than doubled to 124 records for 16 taxa and 39 key sites identified from a total survey of 138 sites. The flora is compared with other local vice-county floras, the ecological and phytosociological aspects discussed and the prospects for conservation considered. Most of the sites were found to be relatively immune from the threat of eutrophication." Titre : A morphological analysis of Centaurea nigra and its associated taxa in Hertfordshire Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : M. Harris, Auteur Année de publication : 2018 Article en page(s) : pp. 169-181 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Knapweed  introgression  Centaurea debeauxii Résumé : "Centaurea nigra is a common grassland species within the variable, taxonomically difficult C. jacea group. C. debeauxii has recently been raised from subspecies to species level prompting an increase in recording. Difficulty in identifying these species is compounded by intra-species variation and the presence of introgressed hybrid swarms comprising not only C. nigra and C. debeauxii as parents but also C. jacea, an introduced species. This study uses multi-variate analytical techniques to identify and test the most diagnostic characters for these taxa. Fifteen morphological characters were measured on a range of herbarium specimens of C. nigra s.l. and principal component analysis was used to identify which characters are the most discriminating. Five selected characters were used in a discriminant analysis to compare Centaurea populations in Hertfordshire occupying a range of habitat types. The outcomes were tested using ANOSIM to test whether there is a significant difference between populations. Capitulum characters are shown to be discriminatory and used to confirm the presence of C. debeauxii and hybrids of C. debeauxii and C. nigra in the county together with evidence of contamination from C. jacea. Populations containing C. debeauxii range from mostly pure downland ecotypes to highly variable hybrid populations dominated by C. debeauxii but which show evidence of C. nigra characteristics. Some hybrid populations are closer to C. nigra and these are interpreted as C. nigra being the local taxon. Different habitat preferences determined by soil, wetness and acidity are confirmed. A method of defining populations is proposed."
