Within this area, the species colonizes the same kinds of substrate as in other climatically similar areas in Europe, viz. rotten wood, tree bases and, to a lesser degree, bare soil. Only a small proportion of the seemingly available substrate (0.2–8.3%) is colonized, a smaller proportion in the pine forests than in the spruce forests. DECORANA and TWINSPAN analyses of sociological data from random squares indicated that the association Orthodontietum linearis (Barkman) v. Hübschmann is heterogeneous and that its species composition varies considerably with the habitat. O. lineare seems to be competitively inferior compared with the species commonly found in its habitats and it probably survives in the area due to a high dispersal and colonization capacity." A combined approach using sequence data from all three genomes, information obtained from the secondary structures of the nad5 group I intron, and morphological data was performed in order to clarify species concepts in the Hedwigia ciliata-complex. In agreement with earlier studies the separation of Rhacocarpus in its own family Rhacocarpaceae can be rejected. The genus is related to Braunia and therefore clearly belongs to the Hedwigiaceae. Based on molecular data Pseudobraunia californica is shown to be related to Hedwigia. Since several of the morphological characters are of questionable systematic value and the remaining characters are few, a separation in its own genus is inappropriate. We transfer Pseudobraunia californica back to Hedwigia californica. We show that the Hedwigia ciliata-complex in Europe consists of at least 4 species, Hedwigia ciliata, Hedwigia stellata, Hedwigia striata (which is here transferred back to species rank) and a cryptic species of which we do not have enough information yet to identify it as one of the existing taxa or as a new species. All Australian specimens included in our analyses, which were believed to be Hedwigia ciliata s. str., belong to this taxon rendering the occurrence of Hedwigia ciliata s. str. in Australia questionable. Hedwigia ciliata var. leucophaea cannot be maintained with its current morphological circumscription. The distinguishing characters can obviously be developed independently in some taxa of the Hedwigia ciliata complex. Furthermore we found evidence for potential hybridisation in some of the specimens determined as Hedwigia ciliata var. leucophaea, as nuclear and organellar DNA is originating from different taxa.
Based on the presented results, Hedwigia striata (Wilson) Bosw. is recognized as a distinct species with more or less distinctly plicate leaves and straight rather than flexuose perichaetial leaf cilia." In Sweden and Fennoscandia, there are three taxa, Hedwigia stellata Hedenäs, sp. nov., H. ciliata (Hedw.) Ehrh. ex P. Beauv. var. ciliata and H. ciliata var. leucophaea B., S. & G. Hedwigia stellata is recognized by its mostly recurved or reflexed leaf apices in the upper sterile shoots when dry, its sharply pointed leaf apex and its uni- or occasionally bi-papillose median leaf cells, with pelt ate papillae on the abaxial side. In both varieties of H. ciliata the leaf apices are erect to patent (occasionally spreading) or following the leaf curvature when dry, many or most leaf apices are truncate or pluripapillose and the median leaf cells are 1-4(-5)- papillose, with most cells having more than one papilla and the papillae are not peltate. Hedwigia ciliata var. ciliata differs from H. ciliata var. leucophaea in the length of the hair-point ((4-)7-33% versus (15-)22-55(-65)% of leaf length), in having less strongly papillose hair-points (macroscopically appearing greyer in var. ciliata than in var. leucophaea), in having more strongly recurved stem leaf margins than the latter and in having slightly larger spores ((23-)25-35 μm versus 19.5-28(-30)μm). Hedwigia ciliata var. ciliata occurs throughout Sweden whereas H. ciliata var. leucophaea is found in the north and in the mountains and H. stellata is known from the southern parts only." [Thèmes] BryophytesMots-clés : hybridation variation morphologique complexe Syntrichia ruralis Résumé : "This study focusses on the molecular and morphological variation among Scandinavian species within the Syntrichia ruralis complex (S. calcicola, S. norvegica, S. ruraliformis, S. ruralis) of the moss family Pottiaceae, plus the similar-looking S. princeps. Molecular variation was explored based on the internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1), and the plastid atpB-rbcL spacer and rpl16 G2 intron. The relationships of the S. ruralis complex taxa were evaluated by including twelve additional, morphologically defined Syntrichia species in the ingroup, including S. subpapillosissima that was here shown to occur in Scandinavia. The molecular evidence favours a wide circumscription of the S. ruralis complex, including the species around S. caninervis and some other ones but excluding S. princeps, and that these species are closely related. ITS1 paralogues were revealed in almost one-third of the samples, and for those cloned between 2 and 8 variants were found, including specimens with paralogues belonging to two (2 cases) or three (1) different species. Together with several cases of discrepancy between ITS1 and plastid relationships, this could suggest an exchange of genetic material between species and may explain the extensive and partly overlapping morphological variation among some of them. Syntrichia subpapillosissima and S. ruralis var. epilosa may represent special phenotypes within S. ruraliformis or S. ruralis, but studies of more material of these are required to decide their correct status."
