Based on a huge vegetation-plot database and a consistent and well-documented methodology, the complete vegetation of this federal state in NE Germany was phytociolociologally classified de novo. The result are 34 phytosociological classes, 12 subclasses, 70 orders, 6 suborders, 125 alliances and 284 associations. This text volume contains detailed descriptions, nomenclatural revisions, diagnostic species and conservation assessments of all syntaxa of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The Introductory section provides detailed insights into the natural history of the study region as well as the methodology of the project. The concluding Conservation section summarizes the outcomes of the unique conservation assessment methodology applied in the project. An Introduction and summary for English-speaking readers (M. Isermann & J. Dengler; pp. 16–21 of the text volume 2004) makes most of the content of both volumes accessible to persons not comprehending German." Expert-based vegetation indicator systems have been developed to measure and characterize human impacts on vegetation. Floristic Quality Assessment (FQA) is a widely used, primarily North American system for assessing degradation and natural quality through species-based values called coefficients of conservatism. The hemeroby and naturalness indicator value (NIV) systems were independently developed for users to assess human impacts in Europe. Despite the similarities among these indicator systems, there is no mutual recognition among them, and they have developed and operate in relative isolation from one another.
We describe how FQA and naturalness indicator values, in particular, could be considered twin systems. Despite these core similarities, users of these systems do not cite each other, potentially overlooking benefits from applying methods and concepts from separate systems. The FQA, hemeroby, and NIV systems have unique weaknesses, strengths, and primary applications compared to other ecological indicator systems.
We conclude by discussing the future role and utility of the three specialized human impact indicator systems for scientists and practitioners. Human impact indicator values may be valuable for use in basic research, but arguably their most important applications are in the practice of conservation, such as monitoring restored ecosystems." To redefine the indicator values we focused on the following questions: What is meant by phytogeographical continentality as the basic principle behind Ellenberg’s indicator values for continentality? Can we redefine the continentality indicator values based on an assessment protocol rendering the values more reproducible? What are the differences between Ellenberg’s indicator values for continentality and the redefined ones as a statistical dataset, and in application? Location Northern Hemisphere, Central Europe Methods Biogeographical indicator values are based on global species distribution data. Species’ distribution information is converted to standardized range formulas that combine information on occurrence across floristic zones, altitudinal preferences, and the distribution within the oceanity-continentality gradient. Improved and revised range formulas are converted to new indicator values for continentality (C-value) using simple algorithms. Results New indicator values for continentality (C-values) and amplitudes for 2,984 taxa of Central European vascular plants are presented. The main improvement is the application of a comprehensible assessment protocol. The new C-value gained a more balanced frequency distribution, rendering it more useful for broad-scale biogeographic analysis. Conclusions For the first time, biogeographical indicator values derived with a consistent method that is based on distribution data are presented. Occurrence information and vegetation data are becoming increasingly available globally, while changing climatic conditions inevitably accelerate species range dynamics, and therefore the application of biogeographical indicator values will increase."
