These are highly organized structuresconsisting of a base, known as the gemmiphore, that is six-leaved andpersistent, and an apical portion known as the gemma. This latter portioncomprises six decussately arranged, food-storing leaves enclosing a minuteterminal shoot. This apical portion disperses by abscission from thegemmiphore. These gemmiphore-gemmae structures (hereafter referred tosimply as ‘‘gemmae’’) are distributed along the plant’s main shoots and arethought to be dispersed by rain or wind. Gemmae are important in forming andmaintainingHuperziapopulations and contribute to the commonness ofinterspecific hybrids, which lack viable spores (Wagner and Beitel,inFlora ofNorth America. Editorial Committee, eds. 1993+Flora of North America Northof Mexico. New York and Oxford. 2:20–21. 1993; Reutter, Amer. Fern J. 77:50–57. 1987)." [Espèces (in biblio)] HuperziaMots-clés : espèce végétale circumboréale Résumé : "A new species of gemmiferous clubmoss, Huperzia continentalis, is described. This species is most abundant in northwestern North America, but also occurs in Greenland, northern Europe, and northeastern Siberia. Material of this species was previously treated as Huperzia haleakalae, but detailed morphological study shows that the species differ by color, leaf size and shape, and gemma distribution. With the recognition of Huperzia continentalis, H. haleakalae is only known from the type, collected on Maui in 1840, and is likely extinct. Huperzia continentalis is also compared to similar species of Huperzia with which it co-occurs; it is readily distinguished from these taxa by plant size, leaf dimensions, and the size and distribution of gemmae. Hybrids between H. continentalis and four other Huperzia species are discussed." Titre : Use of Gemma Characters to Identify North American Huperzia (Lycopodiaceae) Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Arthur V. Gilman, Auteur ; Weston Testo, Auteur Année de publication : 2015 Article en page(s) : pp. 145-161 Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Huperzia Résumé : "All North American firmosses (Huperzia: Lycopodiaceae) produce highly specialized vegetative propagules known as gemmae. Though gemmae are of interest to morphologists, they have been used only rarely as aids in identification. To improve understanding of their variation among North American species and to explore their systematic utility we surveyed gemmae of all species in North America north of Mexico and provide measurements, comparative descriptions, and images. Several characters of the gemmae, including their size, shape, and morphology of the leaves that comprise them vary considerably across the species studied and can be used to distinguish species. A dichotomous key based on gemma characters is provided, and several notable range expansions are reported. We anticipate this study will help resolve confusion regarding the identity of North American Huperzia species, particularly among the taxa in the northern and western regions of the continent, which remain poorly understood."
