"The entire South Atlantic coast of the United States, from southern Virginia to northern Florida, is a soft, sandy shoreline that is geologically very young. During the last interglacial period, perhaps 100.000 years B.P., the entire present shoreline was covered by an interglacial sea. During the Wisconsin glacial period, the sea retreated to a position 100 or more meters below its present elevation. Since about 18.000 B.P. sea level has been rising. It continues to do so at a very slow rate today.
The loose sands of which the South Atlantic shoreline is composed are brought to the sea by large river systems and are easily moved about by currents and winds. Consequently, the South Atlantic coast is a highly changeable environment. Furthermore, it is characterized by well-developed dune systems with characteristic vegetation. In addition to the vegetation types characteristic of the dunes proper, one must also consider the shrubby and woody vegetation behind the dune system as a part of the strand complex of the south Atlantic coast."
