[Thèmes] TaxonomieRésumé : "This revision was undertaken in connexion with the preparatory work for Flora Europaea. The genus Petrorhagia (Tunica auct.) had not been the subject of a recent survey and several interesting problems of generic circumscription required a solution. The greater part of this study has been based on herbarium material from the institutions listed below. Several species are still known from only a few collections and the scope for field work in this genus is very wide.
Over fifty taxa within the genus have been described at specific level (under Tumica, Gypsophila, Dianthus, etc.). Twenty-five species are recognized in this revision.
Numerous taxonomic and distributional problems remain to be solved, especially in the eastern Mediterranean region where complex variation patterns are evident from the material it has been possible to examine. These patterns bear some resemblance to the kind described by Ehrendorfer (1958) as Fossil Hybrid Complexes in his studies on Galium sect. Jubogalium. Much further factual information is needed, however, before the possible evolutionary relationships of the species of Petrorhagia can be outlined. The species and subspecies are delimited in this revision in a morphologicalgeographical sense (cf. Heywood, 1958)." Kunth contains both diploid and tetraploid plants (Blackburn, 1933, Bocher et al., 1953, 1955). The cytotypes appear to have different distributions, the more widespread diploid being replaced in W.S.W. Europe by the tetraploid. Because of the close morphological similarity between the cytotypes, and the difficulty of separating them, K. prolifera has come to be widely referred to in the literature as an example of the phenomenon of semi-cryptic polyploidy (cf. Heywood, 1958, Larsen, 1960). In the course of a revision of the whole genus, we have had occasion to make a detailed study of the K. prolifera group, as a result of which it has become apparent that not only can the diploid and tetraploid races be separated fairly satisfactorily on the basis of their seed-coat morphology, but the differences had been recognised precisely many years previously. Although it has usually been assumed that the tetraploids have arisen from the diploids by autoploidy, the morphological evidence suggests that another diploid species, K. velutina (Guss.) Reichb., is involved and that the tetraploid has been formed as a result of allopolyploidy between it and diploid K. prolifera."
