Résumé : |
"It is well known that Pteridium aquilinun (bracken) is a plant requiring good conditions of soil drainage for active growth. Thus it flourishes in woodlands and on the drier slopes of upland pastures, but is invariably arrested in its advance by impeded drainage.
Recently, it has been shown that the aeration status of soils under Pteridietum is high as indicated by estimation of oxygen diffusion rate (Poel 1960 a, b). While dominant Pteridium is excluded from marshy are-as (where oxygen diffusion rates appear to vary according to the degree of stagnation of water in the soil but are always considerably lower than in Pteridietum soils) small 'islands' of Pteridium are often found. Excavation of the underground parts in typical examples showed that, although few, usually small and unhealthy, fronds are produced, a compact but often elaborate rhizome system exists which has great potentialities for growth (Poel 1951). Furthermore, it was found that these colonies are connected, or have at one time been connected, by rhizomes to the Pteridietum adjoining the flush. The view was put forward that, following general deterioration of drainage, Pteridium had survived locally where aeration conditions remained at a tolerable level.
In the present study, the transition in aeration conditions between Pteridietum and Juncetum acutiflori has been investigated by means of transects of soil oxygen diffusion rate estimations. In addition, quantitative evidence has been sought in support of the writer's hypothesis concerning the cause of survival of Pteridium colonies in flush areas.
This work was carried out during the summer of 1959 at Ballochraggan, Port of Menteith, Perthshire." (source : auteur) |
